Our research group has been interested for many years in the study of the biodegradation of lignocelullose, particularly of xylan, a component of the hemicelluloses. The soft-rot fungus Penicillium purpurogenum has been used as a model organism. This fungus grows in a wide variety of carbon sources and secretes to the medium a large number of enzymes. Several of these enzymes have been purified, characterized and sequenced. More recently we have directed our interest to the study of the secretome as a whole in order to establish, as far as possible, the nature of the secreted proteins. As tools we have used 2D electrophoresis and analysis of the spots by mass spectrometry. In this seminar I will present the results thus far obtained and discuss their possible significance and potential strategies for future work.
