Enabling technologies for operation and real-time control in a liberalized environment, by Tom Dy-Liacco (Wien, 1999) (Power-point presentation) (paper)

CCLAB is
a unique Industry-first facility for the demonstration and testing of power system control center systems and of advanced application software in a simulated real-time environment
a complete SCADA/EMS/DMS laboratory for testing and verifying the practicability and performance of software products for control centers
a centrally-located, independent, one-stop shop for evaluating and comparing different control system design concepts, features, and problem-solving techniques.

CCLAB offers
a much-needed, heretofore unavailable service to the electric power industry - a service to those involved in acquiring, developing, or marketing control center software products and systems.

CCLAB services

System suppliers and software developers can demonstrate their products to interested parties using realistically-sized network models
Utilities and system suppliers can test and evaluate specific third-party application software packages or products
Researchers and software developers can verify the performance of prototypes or software beta-versions in a control center environment
The need for a service such as made available by CCLAB is being accentuated by the evolving open distributed computing architectures of control centers where interoperability and portability, or plug-and-play, have become pressing design objectives. CCLAB is intented to play a key role in testing candidate methods and new developments leading to the realization of these objectives.

Promising innovations in control center application software continue to be reported to the industry in technical papers but generally have remained on paper - untried, unintegrated, unimplemented. CCLAB will stimulate the implementation of innovative technology and will help in narrowing the gap between what is in the literature and what is in practice.

CCLAB
is operated and maintained by the Institut d'Electricité Montefiore of the Université de Liège, under the leadership of Prof. Mania Pavella and Dr Louis Wehenkel,  with the assistance of Dr T.E. Dy-Liacco.
